Prego was also built around sessions recording live percussion in the woods behind Zos house, and again they sit atop an weighty yet bouncy 808 groove, but this time a recording from one of Sams old iphones of a traditional Chinese jam session in a park in Beijing ended up being worked into the breakdown, yet again proving that the only limitation to creating unique textures in your track is the battery level on your phone. Running everything through Bingas collection of hardware back in Bristol glued the whole track together, with techno icon Nastia being an early supporter. Ooh Sorbet started life as a sketch on Zos computer, and it was obvious that between the almost Todd Edwards-style vocal cut-up, and the irresistably swung 4/4 beat that this could be a big tune. With the addition of some found sounds recorded in the woods behind Zos house in upstate New York, and via a few sessions back in Bristol at Bingas Windowless Vault of Doom, this techno / garage anthem took final shape. Instant reactions from crowds around the world - both in our sets, and from Ben UFO - confirmed that both the wiggle and the bass combine exceedingly well here. DEXT Recordings is proud to present the debut EP from Hooverian Blur, a highly respected figure in the world of breakbeat and experimental bass. Following his remix of Mani Festos Borgg on DEXT, he now delivers a full-fledged exploration of his signature sound—razor-sharp breakbeat manipulation fused with deeply experimental, technoid influences. All four tracks on this EP pulse around 160bpm mark, but rather than adhering to convention, Hooverian Blur twists the tempo into new and uncharted territory. His precise breakbeat craftsmanship collides with dark, panic-inducing soundscapes, each track layered with heavy sub-bass and eerie atmospheres designed to disorient and captivate in equal measure. Futuristic synths and mechanical rhythms drive the energy forward, while cavernous bass frequencies add weight to every movement. Each track is a masterclass in controlled chaos—meticulously detailed, fiercely dynamic, and impossible to pin down. Hooverian Blurs debut EP on DEXT Recordings is a fearless statement from an artist constantly redefining the boundaries of breakbeat music.
Narciso has been running parallel to most of his contemporaries, staying close to the main lane but researching in his own distinctive way. He takes pride in being free from limitations and conventions. To me, music doesnt follow fixed rules; it is a field for experimentation, where any sound can be transformed into something pleasing to the ear. Depending on what one considers pleasing, this is a pretty challenging set of tracks. The artist never loses the balance, though, mindful of a certain dance context in which this music thrives, but it is also that same context that is being constantly twisted and reshaped into other forms. Some of those provide fresh ground for others to follow; some are of such individuality that no one else dares disturbance; some quickly return to a safer way of communication. Diferenciado does communicate, but like words can be changed to sound different and still mean the same, such are music and sound with Narciso. Its not about alienation of the listener nor alienation of the self from the surrounding areas. I believe music is present in everything around us. And if anyone can say her/his/their music reflects vision, experience and perception, you know the end result is not often surprising or even that different from previous examples. Well, we stand by Diferenciado in its obvious distinctiveness, and if all the blurb so far may read like a nervous justification its just because of the excitement in helping put this out into the world. As a founding element of RS Produções, where Nuno Beats, DJ Lima, DJ Nulo and Farucox are also found, Narciso has been contributing to a spiritual and creative atmosphere that permeates the environs of Lisbon where that golden, inspired air has to fight for space with many kinds of instability. The beauty and drama of opening tracks Ziu Ziu and Cabelinho (this one with mate Farucox) should be able to touch any sensitive soul that appreciates the quirkiness often attached to pure expression. As in Pipipi too, for example, where melody and rhythm gently and moodily lead you into a brief but sudden interruption feeling like a change into another state of being. Do not shy away. Narciso steps up as himself, not as representative of whatever or whoever.
Sharpening his modernist, hybridised club sound with the restless energy hes made his name on, Breaka returns with Aeoui. Nodding to the vowel-only vocal samples he scatters throughout his tracks, this much-anticipated second album reaffirms Charlie Bakers reputation as a many-sided bass music innovator. Since 2019, Breaka has been primarily shaping his own destiny by self-releasing most of his music, and its afforded him the space to evolve his sound on his own terms. In the wake of his 2022 debut LP We Move, the consistently prolific producer had been looking for a fitting window to channel his work into a second full-length. The opportunity arose when he struck on a fit of jet-lagged inspiration in late 2023 and laid down two of the new albums key tunes, squashy track and yolo bass rewind. Jutting out at a distinct angle from his other work, Breaka knew hed found the anchor point around which to build out the next phase of his sonic evolution. This productive period also aligned with a new studio space to work in, leading to the albums striking double-dose opening of Aeoui and Are We There. With the flavour of his new album established, Breaka was able to comb back through his reams of existing ideas and find the remaining pieces that fit the emerging puzzle. There are enduring influences which bind together the Breaka sound — footwork, techno and dancehall continue to guide the infectious floor-ready pressure of the record, but he worked free of stylistic concerns to find a vibe that remained true to his independent spirit. Its clear the Breaka DNA reaches beyond purist club music — his roots as a jazz drummer from an early age guide the expressive flair in his beat programming, while he took a more direct influence from a mind-blowing Sons Of Kemet gig in 2022 to make psychedelic centre-piece Roundhouse. Elsewhere Cascara pays tribute to the Afro-Cuban rhythm of the same name, which he fused with amapianos lithe log drums and shakers, Brazilian percussion and edgy sound design to create a maverick soundsystem wrecker. The collision of organic and synthetic, crisp forms and chaotic energy are captured perfectly in the cover artwork created with Jordan Core. Its a savvy sum-up of where Breaka is at right now, continually building out with clear intentions while embracing the unpredictable energy of lived experiences and the ideas that get sparked along the way. Thats why Aeoui sounds like no one else out there but Breaka.

Our first release for 2025 is Tokyo Ice Age, a new EP from Prettybwoy. 5 warped club tracks, packaged with remixes from aya and Proc Fiskal, artwork by Tom Oliver and mastered by Raphael Valensi. An ice age is roughly a 100,000 year cycle that Earth has been repeating for at least 1 million years. I have been thinking about these cycles and the erasure/reset of life. When my grandmother died, I discovered lots of old photographs and handwritten documents, faded memories, a small window into my lineage. Ways of life, even since my birth, are changing at an increasing rate and many things are being lost or becoming extinct. The term Ice Age also relates to Japans Employment Ice Age, a period of time between mid 90s and 00s after the countrys Bubble Economy collapsed and young graduates and the many who lost their jobs were unable to find stable sources of income. The generation affected during these Lost Decades are referred to as the Lost Generation or Ice Age Generation. I am part of this generation.
Anyone with a passing interest in footwork and juke will know of Traxman. Corky Strong has a long history of deep involvement in Chicago house, first releasing on the legendary Dance Mania label in the mid nineties, and since then splitting his productions between ghetto house, juke and footwork, releasing alongside Steve Poindexter and Fast Eddie and the late DJ Deeon and DJ Rashad, including an seemingly endless supply of self-released juke edits of whatever direction his deep knowledge of Black American music takes him. The third volume of Da Mind Of Traxman is his first since 2014. In the intervening years hes kept things rolling, DJing regularly, releasing lots of music, becoming a grandfather and being a mentor for younger artists coming up in the scene. This new album was crafted with the help of fellow Planet Mu artist Sinjin Hawke, who took on A&R duties to collate the best from hundreds of tracks dating back to 2005. Sinjin holds Traxmans status in high regard; This album series is important and holds real documentarian value—working on it feels like the modern equivalent of curating a piece of Miles Daviss catalog in the 60s and 70s. Volume 3 showcases Traxmans uncanny ability to take old music into the future without losing the feeling and energy of his samples and influences. He knows how to add a hi-definition modern chassis with the skill of someone who deeply and intuitively understands the craft of dance music. These are some of the purest, most innovative ideations of Chicago footwork.
After a brief pause, Dekmantel are returning to their UFO series to present a cybernetic rush of non-conformist techno from Italian maverick Piezo. Anyone familiar with Dekmantels flagship festival will know the UFO stages showcase spikier strains of modernist body music, and the label series serves to push these sounds forwards in the hands of consistently visionary producers. Milan-based Piezo is usually found at the helm of his Ansia label, exploring a versatile spectrum of experimental club music grounded in soundsystem presence and non-linear structures. On Ecstatic Nostalgia he edges his sound into a more driving, techno-spirited framework which lends itself to the energy of the UFO series beautifully. From tightly wound, artfully fractured 150 rumble and elegant sci-fi breakbeat on to needlepoint electronica and subtly trance-brushed atmospherics, Piezos broad palette fuels an ear-snagging EP which balances visceral impact with a deft touch.
